CPT® Code 17110

CPT® code 17110 is used to report the destruction of benign skin lesions using methods such as electrosurgery, cryotherapy, laser, or chemical treatment. This code applies when multiple benign lesions are treated during the same session and provides guidance for proper billing and documentation.

When to Use CPT® Code 17110

  • When treating 2 to 14 benign lesions in a single session.
  • Lesions may include verrucae, warts, seborrheic keratoses, or skin tags.
  • Applicable for lesions on any area of the skin except mucous membranes.
  • For more than 14 lesions, additional units may be billed using CPT® 17111.

Billing Requirements

  • Document number, size, and type of lesions, as well as method of destruction.
  • Report per session for 2–14 lesions; use separate codes for single lesions (17100) or multiple beyond 14 (17111).
  • Medical necessity should be clearly documented to ensure payer compliance.
  • Include patient location and lesion characteristics to support appropriate billing.

Common Clinical Scenarios

  • A dermatologist treats 10 seborrheic keratoses on a patient’s back with cryotherapy.
