CPT® Code 83525

Description:
CPT® code 83525 is used for the quantitative measurement of total insulin in a patient’s serum or plasma. This test measures both endogenous (naturally produced) and exogenous (injected) insulin to help evaluate insulin production, detect insulin resistance, or monitor metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypoglycemia, and insulinoma.

When to Use:
Use CPT 83525 when testing is required to:

  • Assess insulin production in patients with diabetes or suspected insulin resistance.
  • Investigate unexplained hypoglycemia or evaluate for insulin-secreting tumors (insulinomas).
  • Monitor response to insulin therapy or metabolic treatments.
  • Evaluate pancreatic function and endocrine balance as part of a broader metabolic or hormonal workup.

Billing Requirements:

  • Requires a serum or plasma specimen.
  • Documentation should specify the clinical reason for testing, such as abnormal glucose levels or metabolic symptoms.
  • Report only once per encounter, unless additional medically necessary testing is performed.
  • If ordered alongside related metabolic or hormone tests, follow panel or bundled coding rules.

Includes:

  • Laboratory analysis and quantification of total insulin concentration.
  • Reporting of results to the ordering provider for clinical correlation and management planning.

Tips for Practice Efficiency:
Tracking insulin levels over time can be critical in managing metabolic and endocrine disorders. With OptiMantra, providers can:

  • Automatically link insulin lab results to patient charts for trend monitoring and longitudinal analysis.
  • Document treatment plans and follow-up recommendations directly within the patient record.
  • Ensure accurate coding and billing for endocrine and metabolic lab tests, minimizing administrative errors and delays.

OptiMantra’s integrated platform makes it easy for practices to manage endocrine testing workflows—from lab ordering to result interpretation—helping providers deliver precise, efficient, and personalized patient care.
